God's throne in heaven surrounded by 24 elders and angels

...like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”

1 Peter 1:15-16

In Hebrew, the word for “holy” is kadosh (קָדֹ֔שׁ), and in Greek, it’s hagios (ἅγιος), both of which mean “set apart,” “sanctified,” or “consecrated.” Holiness is closely related to righteousness but distinct from it: righteousness involves right actions aligned with God’s will, while holiness emphasizes the devotion of those actions—and the person—to God, the Holy One.

Under the Old Covenant, Israel was called to holiness through obedience to God’s commandments. The moral, ceremonial, and civil laws set them apart from other nations, emphasizing separation from sin and alignment with God. Yet, these practices pointed beyond themselves, revealing humanity’s deeper need for true cleansing, communion with God, and transformation into His likeness.

Christ fulfilled this call to holiness as the ultimate example of being set apart for God. The holy places, rituals, and practices of the Old Covenant foreshadowed Him: the sacrifices prefigured His atoning death, the priesthood His role as mediator, and the purity laws the spiritual cleansing He provides. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus embodied and completed what the Law foreshadowed, demonstrating what it truly means to be consecrated to God.

The Holiness of God

Holiness is the essence of God's nature. He is described as holy, which means He is unique, pure, and free from sin. God is set apart from all creation yet intimately and constantly engaged with it. He embodies both almighty power and profound humility. Truly, there is no one like Him.

11 Who among the gods is like You, O Yahweh? Who is like You—majestic in holiness, revered with praises, performing wonders?

4 Yahweh is exalted over all the nations, His glory above the heavens. 5 Who is like Yahweh our God, the One enthroned on high? 6 He humbles Himself to behold the heavens and the earth. 7 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the dump 8 to seat them with nobles, with the princes of His people. 9 He settles the barren woman in her home as a joyful mother to her children. Hallelujah!

22 He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth; its dwellers are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in. 23 He brings the princes to nothing and makes the rulers of the earth meaningless. 24 No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner have their stems taken root in the ground, than He blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like stubble. 25To whom will you liken Me, or who is My equal?” asks the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes on high: Who created all these? He leads forth the starry host by number; He calls each one by name. Because of His great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. 27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and why do you assert, O Israel, “My way is hidden from Yahweh, and my claim is ignored by my God”? 28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? Yahweh is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary; His understanding is beyond searching out. 29 He gives power to the faint and increases the strength of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall. 31 But those who wait upon Yahweh will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.

15 For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in a high and holy place, and with the oppressed and humble in spirit, to restore the spirit of the lowly and revive the heart of the contrite. 16 For I will not accuse you forever, nor will I always be angry; for then the spirit of man would grow weak before Me, with the breath of those I have made. 17 I was enraged by his sinful greed, so I struck him and hid My face in anger; yet he kept turning back to the desires of his heart. 18 I have seen his ways, but I will heal him; I will guide him and restore comfort to him and his mourners, 19 bringing praise to their lips. Peace, peace to those far and near,” says Yahweh, “and I will heal them.”

8 And each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around and within. Day and night they never stop saying: “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”

The Holiness of People

God calls His people to be holy as He is holy, they are to live lives that are set apart for His purposes and reflecting His character.

  • If Israel kept their covenant with God, they would be set apart to Him.

Exodus 19:5-6

5 Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, you will be My treasured possession out of all the nations—for the whole earth is Mine. 6 And unto Me you shall be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you are to speak to the Israelites.”

  • Israel is commanded to be holy to Yahweh or set apart from the rest of the nations.

Leviticus 20:26

26 You are to be holy to Me because I, Yahweh, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be My own.

  • Israel is commanded to wear tassels to help them remember to obey God’s commandments so they can be holy.

Numbers 15:39-40

39 These will serve as tassels for you to look at, so that you may remember all the commandments of Yahweh, that you may obey them and not prostitute yourselves by following your own heart and your own eyes. 40 Then you will remember and obey all My commandments, and you will be holy to your God.

  • Under the New Covenant and Christ as the new High Priest gentiles were grafted in to the remnant of Israel who kept their covenant with God (Romans 11), becoming the new priesthood and joining God’s holy nation

1 Peter 2:4-9

4 As you come to Him, the living stone, rejected by men but chosen and precious in God’s sight, 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in Scripture: “See, I lay in Zion a stone, a chosen and precious cornerstone; and the one who believes in Him will never be put to shame.” 7 To you who believe, then, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” 8 and, “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word—and to this they were appointed. 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.

Revelation 5:9-10

9 And they sang a new song: “Worthy are You to take the scroll and open its seals, because You were slain, and by Your blood You purchased for God those from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. 10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign upon the earth.”

Holiness under the Old Covenant

In the Old Covenant, holiness was a central theme and was rooted in the Holy nature of God. Holiness under this covenant signified being set apart for God’s purposes, reflecting His moral purity and uniqueness. Israel, as God’s chosen people, was called to embody holiness in their relationship with Him, distinct from surrounding nations. Holiness was both a gift from God and a responsibility, highlighting humanity's dependence on God for sanctification. This foundation set the stage for the fuller revelation of holiness under the New Covenant in Christ.

Deuteronomy 12:10-14

10 When you cross the Jordan and live in the land that Yahweh your God is giving you as an inheritance, and He gives you rest from all the enemies around you and you dwell securely, 11 then Yahweh your God will choose a dwelling for His Name. And there you are to bring everything I command you: your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and special gifts, and all the choice offerings you vow to Yahweh. 12 And you shall rejoice before Yahweh your God—you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and maidservants, and the Levite within your gates, since he has no portion or inheritance among you. 13 Be careful not to offer your burnt offerings in just any place you see; 14 you must offer them only in the place Yahweh will choose in one of your tribal territories, and there you shall do all that I command you.

Holy Places

A holy space was a place set apart for experiencing God’s presence and communing with Him. Consecrated for God’s purposes, it is marked by reverence and worship, making it distinct from ordinary spaces. In the Bible, holy spaces include the temple, tabernacle, and other sites where God dwelled. In the New Testament, this concept extends to the lives of believers, who become “temples” of the Holy Spirit.

Holy Objects

The concept of being "Most Holy to the Lord" implied a level of sanctity and dedication that is absolute. It reflects the idea of something being entirely set apart for God's purposes, not for common or profane use. Sacred objects were placed in the most holy place, all of them in one way or another foreshadowing Christ.

Holy Offerings

Under the Old Covenant, sacred offerings were central acts of worship that served as expressions of faith, repentance, gratitude, and devotion. These practices involved the ritualistic giving of animals, grains, wine, incense, or other valuable items to God. Sacrifices were seen as a way to atone for sins, seek forgiveness, and restore one’s relationship with God.

Leviticus 22:1-3

1 Then Yahweh said to Moses, 2 “Tell Aaron and his sons to treat with respect the sacred offerings that the Israelites have consecrated to Me, so that they do not profane My holy name. I am Yahweh. 3 Tell them that for the generations to come, if any of their descendants in a state of uncleanness approaches the sacred offerings that the Israelites consecrate to Yahweh, that person must be cut off from My presence. I am Yahweh.

Holy Times

creation of God's calendar, the sun, the moon and the stars

In the Bible, sacred times refer to specific periods or seasons set apart by God on His calendar for worship, rest, and reflection on His covenant and redemptive work in history. These include the weekly Sabbath, which emphasized rest and trust in God as Creator and Sustainer, as well as annual festivals like Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles, which celebrated key moments of deliverance and provision. Holy days were not just rituals but opportunities to realign the people’s focus on God’s faithfulness, renew their relationship with Him, and anticipate the ultimate fulfillment of His promises in the future.

Leviticus 23:1-3

1 Then Yahweh said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them, ‘These are My appointed feasts, the feasts of Yahweh that you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies. 3 For six days work may be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of complete rest, a day of sacred assembly. You must not do any work; wherever you live, it is a Sabbath to Yahweh.

Vowed Items

Vowed items were possessions or offerings that people irrevocably dedicated to God through a solemn promise, often in gratitude or in response to a specific need, symbolizing complete devotion; such offerings— which included firstborn livestock, tithes, and devoted persons or property— were considered most holy to God and could not be redeemed or substituted. Practically, dedicating something to God meant setting it apart as holy, exclusively for His use and purposes, such as service in the Temple.

Holiness under the New Covenant

Under the New Covenant, holiness refers to a state of being set apart for God through faith in Jesus Christ, characterized by moral integrity, spiritual transformation, and a growing likeness to Christ. Unlike the Old Covenant, where holiness was achieved through strict adherence to the Law and ritual purity, the New Covenant shifts the focus to inner renewal through the Holy Spirit. Below are the main points about holiness found in the New Testament.

Sanctification through Suffering and Truth

Believers are sanctified by God’s truth through His Word, following Jesus’ example of sanctification through suffering.

John 17:17-19

17 Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth. 18 As You sent Me into the world, I have also sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify Myself, so that they too may be sanctified by the truth.

Hebrews 2:10-11

10 In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting for God, for whom and through whom all things exist, to make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 For both the One who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers.

Ephesians 5:25-27 (John 15:3)

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her 26 to sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to Himself as a glorious church, without stain or wrinkle or any such blemish, but holy and blameless.

Sanctification by Faith in Christ

Faith in Jesus brings forgiveness and sanctification, turning believers from darkness to light.

Acts 26:17-18

17 I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them 18 to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those sanctified by faith in Me.’

1 Corinthians 1:2

2 To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours…

1 Corinthians 1:30

30 It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God: our righteousness, holiness, and redemption.

Righteousness Leading to Holiness

Living in righteousness leads to holiness, which results in eternal life.

Romans 6:19-23

19 I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to escalating wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness. 20 For when you were slaves to sin, you were free of obligation to righteousness. 21 What fruit did you reap at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? The outcome of those things is death. 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the fruit you reap leads to holiness, and the outcome is eternal life23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

2 Corinthians 7:1

1 Therefore, beloved, since we have these promises, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that defiles body and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

2 Timothy 2:21

21 So if anyone cleanses himself of what is unfit, he will be a vessel for honor: sanctified, useful to the Master, and prepared for every good work.

Sanctification by the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit sanctifies believers, transforming them into holy vessels for God’s use.

Romans 15:15-16

15 However, I have written you a bold reminder on some points, because of the grace God has given me 16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11

9 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who submit to or perform homosexual acts, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor verbal abusers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified (made righteous), in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

2 Thessalonians 2:13

13 But we should always thank God for you, brothers who are loved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning to be saved by the sanctification of the Spirit and by faith in the truth.

Holiness as God’s Will

God’s will for believers is holiness, marked by purity, honor, and obedience.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-8

3 For it is God’s will that you should be holy: You must abstain from sexual immorality; 4 each of you must know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, 5 not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God; 6 and no one should ever violate or exploit his brother in this regard, because the Lord will avenge all such acts, as we have already told you and solemnly warned you. 7 For God has not called us to impurity, but to holiness. 8 Anyone, then, who rejects this command does not reject man but God, the very One who gives you His Holy Spirit.

1 Thessalonians 5:23

23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely (all), and may your entire spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 1:13-16

13 Therefore prepare your minds for action. Be sober-minded. Set your hope fully on the grace to be given you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the passions of your former ignorance. 15 But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

Holy Priesthood

The Church, as the body of Christ, is called to be a holy priesthood, offering lives as spiritual sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, through Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 2:5

"You yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ."

Romans 12:1
Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.

Necessity of Holiness

Without holiness, no one will see the Lord, making it crucial for every believer to live in purity, peace, and righteousness, actively avoiding sin and pursuing a life that reflects God’s character.

Hebrews 12:14

Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.

Matthew 5:8

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

2 Corinthians 7:1

Therefore, beloved, since we have these promises, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that defiles body and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

2 Timothy 2:22
Flee from youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, together with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Holiness during Millennium

During the Millennium, when Christ returns and rules the earth for 1000 years, the old and the new will merge in a profound way. The ceremonial law, which foreshadowed Christ, will continue to find further fulfillment in Him. It will be understood and observed as it was originally designed. The land of Israel and its people will be sanctified, with sacred areas set apart for Yahweh and His priests, and holiness will permeate even the most ordinary aspects of life.

Sanctification of Israel

During the Millennium, all aspects of life in Israel, from the ordinary to the sacred, will be wholly consecrated to Yahweh, reflecting complete holiness and purity in worship and daily living.

Zechariah 14:20-21

20 On that day, HOLY TO YAHWEH will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, and the cooking pots in the house of Yahweh will be like the sprinkling bowls before the altar. 21 Indeed, every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to Yahweh of Hosts, and all who sacrifice will come and take some pots and cook in them. And on that day there will no longer be a Canaanite in the house of Yahweh of Hosts.

Sanctification of Jerusalem

During the Millennium, Jerusalem will be rebuilt and sanctified, becoming holy to Yahweh, it will never again be uprooted or demolished; Yahweh will dwell in Zion, and the city will be called the City of Truth and the Holy Mountain, where all nations will come to learn His ways and walk in His paths.

Jeremiah 31:38-40

38 “The days are coming,”declares Yahweh, “when this city will be rebuilt for Me, from the tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate. 39 The measuring line will once again stretch out straight to the hill of Gareb and then turn toward Goah. 40 The whole valley of the dead bodies and ashes, and all the fields as far as the Kidron Valley, to the corner of the Horse Gate to the east, will be holy to Yahweh. It will never again be uprooted or demolished.”

Zechariah 8:3

This is what Yahweh says: “I will return to Zion and dwell in Jerusalem. Then Jerusalem will be called the City of Truth, and the mountain of Yahweh of Hosts will be called the Holy Mountain.”

Isaiah 2:2-3

2 In the last days the mountain of the house of Yahweh will be established as the chief of the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and all nations will stream to it. 3 And many peoples will come and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us His ways so that we may walk in His paths.” For the law will go forth from Zion, and the word of Yahweh from Jerusalem.

The Portions for the Priests and Levites

During the Millennium, a holy portion of land will be set apart near Judah's territory, dedicated to Yahweh, with a central sanctuary. This sacred area, approximately 13.3 km long and 5.3 km wide (25,000 cubits by 10,000 cubits), will be allocated specifically to consecrated priests, particularly the descendants of Zadok, and the Levites.

Ezekiel 48:8-14

8 Bordering the territory of Judah, from east to west, will be the portion you are to set apart. It will be 25,000 cubits wide, and the length of a tribal portion from east to west. In the center will be the sanctuary. 9 The special portion you set apart to Yahweh shall be 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide. 10 This will be the holy portion for the priests. It will be 25,000 cubits long on the north side, 10,000 cubits wide on the west side, 10,000 cubits wide on the east side, and 25,000 cubits long on the south side. In the center will be the sanctuary of Yahweh. 11 It will be for the consecrated priests, the descendants of Zadok, who kept My charge and did not go astray as the Levites did when the Israelites went astray. 12 It will be a special portion for them set apart from the land, a most holy portion adjacent to the territory of the Levites. 13 Bordering the territory of the priests, the Levites shall have an area 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide. The whole length will be 25,000 cubits, and the width 10,000 cubits. 14 They must not sell or exchange any of it, and they must not transfer this best part of the land, for it is holy to Yahweh.

Sanctification of People

During the Millennial Kingdom, God will cleanse His people from sin, purify them through His Spirit, and write His law on their hearts, empowering them to live in holiness. Through a covenant of peace, He will remove all impurities and idolatry, making His people fully righteous and reflecting His glory as a sanctified and restored creation.

Isaiah 4:3-4

3 Whoever remains in Zion and whoever is left in Jerusalem will be called holy— all in Jerusalem who are recorded among the living— 4 when the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains from the heart of Jerusalem by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of fire.

Jeremiah 31:31-34

31 Behold, the days are coming, declares Yahweh, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt— a covenant they broke, though I was a husband to them,” declares Yahweh. 33 “But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares Yahweh. I will put My law in their minds and inscribe it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be My people. 34 No longer will each man teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know Yahweh,’ because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares Yahweh. For I will forgive their iniquities and will remember their sins no more.”

Ezekiel 36:24-27

24 For I will take you from among the nations and gather you out of all the countries, and I will bring you back into your own land. 25 I will also sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your impurities and all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes and to carefully observe My ordinances.

Zechariah 13:1-2

1 “On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the people of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity. 2 And on that day, declares Yahweh of Hosts, I will erase the names of the idols from the land, and they will no longer be remembered. I will also remove the prophets and the spirit of impurity from the land.

Malachi 3:2-3

2 But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He will be like a refiner’s fire, like a launderer’s soap. 3 And He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver. Then they will present offerings to Yahweh in righteousness.

The Way of Holiness

In the Millennium, a highway, called the Way of Holiness, will connect the nations to Christ on His throne in Jerusalem. This highway will embody both the physical journey of the redeemed to worship Him and the spiritual reality that access to the Father is through Christ alone.

Isaiah 11:16
There will be a highway for the remnant of His people who remain from Assyria, as there was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.

Isaiah 35:8

And there will be a highway called the Way of Holiness. The unclean will not travel it— only those who walk in the Way— and fools will not stray onto it.

Isaiah 40:3
A voice of one calling: “Prepare the way for Yahweh in the wilderness; make a straight highway for our God in the desert.

Isaiah 62:10
Go out, go out through the gates; prepare the way for the people! Build it up, build up the highway; clear away the stones; raise a banner for the nations!

Jeremiah 31:9
They will come with weeping, and by their supplication I will lead them; I will make them walk beside streams of waters, on a level path where they will not stumble. For I am Israel’s Father, and Ephraim is My firstborn.”

John 14:6
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Conclusion

In the Bible, holiness is the essential quality of God, and it extends to all that is associated with Him—places, objects, times, and people. The holiness of these things pointed forward to their ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who is the embodiment of God's holiness. Through Jesus, believers are called to live holy lives, set apart for God's purposes, as they await the full realization of holiness in the new creation.

Revelation 22:10-13

10 Then he told me, “Do not seal up the words of prophecy in this book, because the time is near. 11 Let the unrighteous continue to be unrighteous, and the vile continue to be vile; let the righteous continue to practice righteousness, and the holy continue to be holy.” 12 “Behold, I am coming soon, and My reward is with Me, to give to each one according to what he has done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”
